Malaria
Malaria is one of the biggest killer in west Orissa, Falciparum strain being the major killer. SRUSTI through a network of 9 CSOs took up Malaria control programme in 500 villages of Nuapada district. Using environmental measures, it was able to create awareness & sustainable methods of Malaria control. Use of Neem oil & smoke to control mosquito & social marketing of Mosquito nets is a continuous activity. Malaria is one of the major cause of maternal mortality as well.
Sanitation
Poor sanitation & unsafe drinking water is the cause of many diseases particularly in the rural areas. Most rural household continue to live without a toilet in their respective houses. SRUSTI with financial support from the Rural Water & Service & Sanitation department has been able to put in place more than 453 toilets in five panchayats of Khariar block. It has been creating awareness about safe drinking water to combat water borne diseases. Low cost mud water filter is being popularised for safe drinking water.
